Vandalism in progress

Specific wikis

This page exists to post alerts about any incidents of vandalism that are occuring, so that other users and administrators can more promptly respond to them. Wikiquote's definition of vandalism is the same as WikipediA's and can be seen at w:Wikipedia:Vandalism. Care should be taken before assuming an initial contribution is vandalism unless it's blatantly obvious the user knows what they're doing.

If the vandal is known to attack more then one langauge, or more then one mediawiki wiki, it is recommended they also be noted on meta:Vandalism reports.

Contents

Adding reports

It is recommended the following be done when adding a new report. Start a new section, give it a unique title (Usually the name of the offender), then list the accounts/IPs used, and their MO. The template {{vandal}} can be used to give a number of links handy for dealing with vandals. Its use is {{vandal|NameOrIPOfTheVandal}}, where the text after the | is the IP/name, without the "User:" prefix. Also note that spaces in a username need to be written as underscores (_). Also, for vandalic usernames that get blocked indefinately, there exists a template {{indefblockeduser}}.

If you are reporting SPAM (commercial links posted to multiple pages), post about them in the section on SPAM.

212.247.22.142

212.247.22.142 (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) has executed two separate sessions of vandalism: one on 12 March on List of films (which I reverted), and a set of three (so far) on Main Page (which Dabbler has been quickly and conscientiously reverting). This user has made no other contributions. Can we block them for 24 hours and post a warning, like on Wikipedia, or are we not yet that prepared to fight persistent vandalism? — Jeff Q (talk) 02:26, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

As you probably noticed, I had seen the problem and blocked the user just a few minutes before you posted this. This level of spam is something I do respond to with blocks as soon as possible. ~ Kalki 05:18, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Ass pus vandal

The ass puss vandal (In other names) was a cross project vandal known as the Pelican shit vandal on the WikipediA, and other names elsewhere. One of his vandalism methods was to use raw HTML code to position a luridly colored text box with obscene text at the top of the page.

User:68.239.11.154

68.239.11.154 (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) - getting rid of quotes from some painters' article, already noticed with {{test}} & {{WQisnot1}} (typical editing pattern is found at Leonardo Da Vinci - erases all quotes and left only biography). But this anon did at least one legitimate submission to Frida Kahlo, unless it is a hoax. So currently no blocking is placed on this address. --Aphaia 00:59, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

New twist from User:BeanGlue

I just stopped another "pelican shit" vandalism from BeanGlue (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log), but I'm having problems reverting the vandalism. Image:WikiThanks.png is being used to insert a rude comment into Aphaia's signatures, especially on new-user greetings, but the edit histories of the pages that include that link show only Aphaia's edits, not any from BG. There are some current performance problems, too, so I can't be sure the histories are being accurated queried from the database, but I'm concerned that the PS vandal has found a way to insert data into the database without it being reflected in page histories. This would render the standard reversion tools useless. We'd either have to revert legitimate edits or manually edit each instance to remove the vandal content. Either way, the page histories would make it look like Aphaia (and anyone else PS targets) is exceptionally rude, because the edits look atomic. I need help on this. — Jeff Q (talk) 21:20, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sc & Scxx

Sc (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) & Scxx (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) made spams on their own user talk. From its content, both accounts seems to belong to one person supposedly. I think it is on a bad faith ("If I put spams on my talk, then they can't remove it!") and therefore those accounts deserved to permanent ban like other intentional registered vandals. But I want to listen to others. --Aphaia 03:28, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Wikiquote doesn't allow spam anywhere for any reason. There's a cross-project ban on advertising, if I'm not mistaken, so I feel we're on solid ground to edit out or speedy-delete such stuff. — Jeff Q (talk) 07:18, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I would have liked so, on a same ground; even talk we may not allow such content. I support heartfully those speedy deletion of Jeffq.--Aphaia 07:45, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Latest instance of vandalism occured after 2 warnings, so I've blocked this IP address for 1 week and left a message about this on its talk page. It is used by wa.edu.au, an educational institution in Western Australia, so it's probably a dynamic IP. — Jeff Q (talk) 27 June 2005 09:35 (UTC)

She keeps making major reorganizations that we are supposed to look through to make sure no harm was done, when she consistently violated the trust in the past. I request that she will be blocked for a long time (a month). It is too draining to the project to have to consistently debate or revert her. I have given up all hope of trying to communicate with her how to work within wikiquette. Thanks ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 7 July 2005 14:46 (UTC)

Abortion

Advertisements of GordonWattsDotCom's activism have been posted along with at least two quotations on the page for quotes on Abortion. One quotation (listed at the bottom of that page) does not seem a valuable or appropriate inclusion into a list of quotations, but is rather an interview segment that seems it was listed simply in order to credit himself. In case of the latter, the credit reads,

Attorney Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who argued Roe v. Wade, answering a member of the audience, when she visited Florida State University on 03 April 1996, in a lecture series. Context: FSU student, Gordon Watts, who later gained fame in his close 4-3 split decision to save Terri Schiavo, (and doing better than Florida Governor, Jeb Bush, who lost the same case in a 7-0 shutout at the Florida Supreme Court), asked a question from the audience, as quoted in The Register, 4/3/1996

, and the opportunity was taken to link to two websites about Gordan Watts.

GordonWattsDotCom has posted a similar advertisements of his activism on a different issue on the talk page for said list of quotes. Under the "Links" heading, half of one of his entries is:

Also, mediation has stalled on the Terri Schiavo page. Uncle Ed has made some progress, but this URL might be relevant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Terri_Schiavo/Mediation Your voice needs to be heard, here is practicable in your schedule of things. Buckle up, and be safe in your travels, and have a nice day.--GordonWattsDotCom 14:59, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

Under of "Block instead of freeze" on the same talk page, he ends his post with this:

In closing, thank you for having kept up to date on all the issues and controversies on the Abortion page here, especially since you do in fact have many more responsibilities here at Wikiquote, but are unpaid. If it is any consolation, I too was unpaid for over a year, while I fought in court for Terri Schiavo's life, and I almost won my case, doing better than the Governor, but guess who got paid more?
The Search engines also show of my encounter with Clinton appointee, Judge Whittemore -in Federal Court -another case, like the one above:
"Well, I feel guilty for talking so much and bragging, but I wanted to reassure you that you are not the only person who is trying to better the world on your own personal & unpaid time. I really lost a lot (financially and emotionally) when I took time off from work (my active job search, in this case). Well, I guess that's all I have to say: I am sorry I couldn't help more, but I tried my best, and I am sure you all will take care of things when I have moved on to other things, like personal responsibilities (cleaning my room) or getting a job.--GordonWattsDotCom 01:36, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

The statements quoted here were unnecessary, off-topic and completely beside the points, as reading of the statements to which he responded will reveal.

Wikiquote's descriptions of itself seem to indicate that it's intended for something else than spam postings. (By Dr. K)

First of all, nothing of the sort is "in progress": Gordon has not edited Wikiquote for a few weeks now. If you feel there is irrelevant content, you can trim it down and move the bulk of it to the talk page. As for going off-topic on talk pages, this is certainly discouraged but allowed: everyone here has gone off on a tangent, I believe, once in a while. Calling this (or even adding what seemed to be at the very least tangentially relevant information) to the Abortion page "vandalism" is probably inadvisable, and needlessly insulting. While Gordon made some controversial edits, on the whole he has done much to remain civil and he attempted to contribute. Thanks ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 18:27, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

68.101.66.175

68.101.66.175 (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) created two pages (Andy conner and Aubrey way) which initially had content along the lines of "i'm gay" for both pages. I tagged both for speedy deletion, and in short time, the tags were removed by the same user, who also posted to Talk:Aubrey way "don't delete it aubrey is really gay" and then made another edit to make it seem as though someone agreed. —LrdChaos 03:25, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Comcast user(s) vandalizing my talk page

For the past 24 hours, my talk page has been repeatedly vandalized by one or more Comcast users. (I suspect a single dial-up user who is calling different numbers.) The pattern is the same each time: they delete my ARCHIVE INDEX and "Concrete Hippo" sections of my page and replace at least one with the text "Thery ntresting...see more / [links:all]". (The last incident just deleted the archive index, probably because I just archived the "Concrete Hippo" section. This leads me to believe it has something to do with the deleted "Concrete Hippo" article, which was edited by 62.49.16.137 (talk · contributions), UpTheBracket (talk · contributions) (probably the same person as 62.49), and 84.65.155.3 (talk · contributions).) Here are the current offending IP addresses:

I've blocked the most recent one (76.148) for a week as a pattern vandal, but feel uncomfortable doing so, as it's my talk page. The network spread is too large to do a limited net block. I'm not sure what to do about this. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 00:50, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, here's another day or so of them:

As I've said, I don't feel comfortable blocking people vandalizing my pages, or even warning them unless I believe we will back up the warnings with action, so I'm asking my fellow sysops to help out here. (Thanks to everyone who's been reverting them, and to UDScott for one of the 2 blocks.) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 04:37, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I guess I was a bit frazzled and not thinking too clearly in my original post here. Of course these aren't dial-ups; Comcast is a broadband cable connection. I'm not too familiar with it, but I suspect this is an attack through open proxies, with the culprit simply scanning for unsecured and unsuspecting PC users in the Comcast network. Do we have proxy blocking enabled? Should we? Meanwhile, I'm surpressing my scruples and have started blocking these IP addresses for 1 week when they pop up. I'd appreciate some help in developing a better response to this problem. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 05:04, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

SPAMmers

As SPAMs are one of the most common wiki-vandalisers, they have a seperate section here.

DragonEff

A user logged in as "DragonEff (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log)" added a long list of links to about 20 pages. It appeared that they just went up the recent changes page and did a paste to the end of each page. I fixed the pages in question but thought the sysop might like to look at this user. He also created a page named Dragona with the same list of links that should probably be removed.--Sasquach 03:18, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

211.231.187.48

Please correct me if I am wrong (I'm new here) but 211.231.187.48 (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) seems to be in the process of vandalizing (search engine spamming?) several pages right now (00:00, 31 May 2005). The result is pages filled with links to videos-mpeg.net, such as the page I had just finished updating: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/The_Venture_Brothers

Since I am new here (first update today), I am posting here to let the professionals take over. Also, I don't know how to revert their changes.

Thank you for your notice, it's spamming exactly. I'll care for those vandalized pages. Enjoy --Aphaia 00:48, 31 May 2005 (UTC)
